August 2010
Hopefully, this is the last Saddlebags that I will need to write by remote control. Surgery is over, I’m doing fine, and my limitations should accommodate Cowboy shooting for the September match (which I will write). Highlander wrote this month’s match.
38 shooters came out for August’s shoot. Results are summarized as follows:
Walker Colt was Top Shooter and Top Gunfighter. Geronimo Jim came in Second place and was Senior. 3rd place and Top Wrangler was Punch, followed by Hud McCoy (Top Cowboy) and Snake Eye Skulker.
Other category winners were:
49er: Wild Bill Diamond
Ladies’ Senior: Misfire Maggie
Classic Cowboy: Letort Lawman
Frontier Cartridge Duelist: Smoky Hill Thompson
Senior Duelist: Trooper Steve
Frontier Cartridge: Montana Max
Elder Statesman: Church Key
Buckaroo: Lead Slinging Nick
Silver Senior: Renegade Lee
Ladies’ 49er: Prairie Dog Pauline
Sorry, no clean matches this month. (Darn, No Duelists! I missed a great opportunity to win my category for a change!)
I’ll be writing the September match. Mostly close and simple. Hope to see you all then.
Until then, Your pard,
Doc Hornaday
WESTSHORE POSSE
JANUARY 2010 MINUTES
Meeting was called to order on January 10, 2010 at 10:14 AM by Doc Hornaday. A quorum was present, represented by members Slowpoke John, Letort Lawman, Bird Dog Jake, Cactus Charlie, Tucker, Chester Young, Whitefish Willie, Hired Gun, Morgan James, Copper Starr, Skinny, Shendo Kid, Highlander, Smoky Hill Thompson and Doc Hornaday. Non members Hud McCoy and Ken O’Donnell (WSSA President) were also present.
2009 Meeting minutes were accepted without public reading. Motion by Tucker, seconded by Chester Young – Unanimous vote to accept.
Treasury report was given and approved. 8 scheduled matches were held in 2009. For the year, we posted a $242 surplus. We will again give $500 to Westshore Sportsman’s Association.
OLD BUSINESS:
Our props still have
not been replaced at the Rocky Gorge. Ken O’Donnell was present at the meeting
and stated that as soon as the loader is repaired, he will gather a work party
and re-erect the props. They will have uprights placed in pipes cemented into
the ground so that they can be lifted out if needed in the future.
As discussed in the 2009 meeting, discussion was held on the
amendment to the bylaws regarding elections as follows: “Candidates for officer
positions shall have been, for the prior year, members in good standing of a
SASS affiliated club and currently a member in good standing of the Westshore
Posse.”
Hired Gun raised the concern that this seemed to imply one had to be
a MEMBER of Westshore Posse for the previous year. Others pointed out that due
to the wording that there was no WSP residency requirement (other than current
membership) and that the “previous year” clause applied only to membership in
ANY SASS affiliated club. The wording was changed to read,
“Candidates for officer positions shall have been, for the prior year, members
in good standing of a SASS affiliated club and at the time of election currently
a member in good standing of the Westshore Posse.”
Motion to accept this modified wording was made by Copper Starr and seconded by Letort Lawman. The motion carried by a vote of 14 Aye, to 1 Nay.
The final wording is: “Candidates for officer positions shall have been, for the prior year, members in good standing of a SASS affiliated club and at the time of election currently a member in good standing of the Westshore Posse.”
NEW BUSINESS:
We have not had a
President throughout 2009. The role of the president was explained, and
included being at most of the matches, and writing some of the matches.
At 1054, a request for recess was made. Motion was made by Copper
Starr and seconded by Morgan James, and the meeting stood recessed at that time.
At 1112 the Meeting was brought back into session. The floor was
opened for nomination for 2010 club officers.
Hired Gun nominated
Hud McCoy (now a WSP member) for President, motion seconded by Letort Lawman.
No other nominees were offered for President and Hud McCoy was voted in as
President by voice vote.
Doc Hornaday
nominated Highlander for Vice President, Hud McCoy seconded the motion. No
other nominees were offered for Vice-President and Highlander was voted in as
Vice-President by voice vote.
Letort Lawman
nominated Smoky Hill Thompson for Treasurer, Whitefish Willie seconded the
motion. No other nominees were offered for Treasurer and Smoky Hill Thompson
was voted in as Treasurer by voice vote.
Whitefish Willie nominated Doc Hornaday for Secretary. Hired Gun
seconded the motion. No other nominees were offered for Secretary and Doc
Hornaday was voted in as Secretary by voice vote.
Whitefish Willie nominated Chester Young for Match Results
Coordinator with Morgan James seconding the motion. No other nominees were
offered for Match Results Coordinator and Chester Young was voted in as Match
Results Coordinator by voice vote.
Territorial Governor’s Report
Hired Gun briefed us on rules changes enacted at the Territorial Governor’s convention.
Briefly, NONE of the proposed rule changes were passed. Under consideration were:
- Cone of Safety
- Bisley hammers on Non-Bisley guns
- Adjustable sights for Classic Cowboy and Gunfighter
- Elimination of the minor safety penalty for overloading a firearm
- Frontier Cartridge Gunfighter category
Again, ALL of the above were DEFEATED. (None received the required 2/3 majority required (note from Chuckaroo))
Floor was opened for further discussion under the direction of the new President, Hud McCoy.
Doc Hornaday will notify Ken O’Donnell of our new President, and also address the concern that the WSSA website link to WSP apparently is still directing to our old (defunct) website.
Also, Chuckaroo will be apprised of the change when Doc Hornaday forwards the minutes to him for posting.
Additionally, Doc Hornaday will ask Ken O’Donnell about getting a gate card for the vendor. Since he often arrives before other members, this would be helpful and apparently not unprecedented as other non-members with business on-site have been issued cards.
Meeting adjourned at 11:43 A M.
Respectfully submitted,
Doc Hornaday
Posse Secretary
Westshore Posse 1911 Shoot Guidelines
On occasion, we will hold joint 1911 / Single Action Revolver, Cowboy Action
Shoots.
This will be a standard Cowboy Action Shooting match with the added attraction
of being able to shoot a 1911 type pistol in lieu of standard single action
revolvers. Scenarios will not differ no matter which style is shot. Folk's
shooting 1911's will have a separate category for scoring purposes and there
will be two overall match winners.
1911 Pistol Requirements:
* Standard single action 1911 Government model pistol having fixed or conventional adjustable sights, a 4-inch or longer barrel and fire .45-caliber ammunition.
* A minimum of 2 magazines capable of holding 5 rounds.
*Period 1911ish holster capable of securely holding 1911 pistol.
Special instructions for folks using a 1911 pistol:
* While pistol is holstered behind the shooting line, the hammer will be lowered and no magazine will be inserted into the magazine well.
* Prior to each stage, magazines will be loaded at the loading table under the supervision of the loading table officer. Magazines will be loaded with no more than five rounds. A magazine will then be inserted into the pistol and the pistol will be holstered. The pistol will be carried to the firing line in the holster with the hammer down on an empty chamber and then made ready on the firing line during the stage (on the clock).
* When the stage begins (on the clock), the shooter will draw the pistol and cycle the slide when it is time for the first pistol target to be shot. If there is a split pistol stage (pistols not shot back to back), the 1911 shooter, after shooting the first and second set of pistol targets, will eject the magazine, and stage the pistol with the slide locked. Any loaded magazine dropped during a stage is dead and may not be retrieved.
* After shooting the entire stage, the 1911 shooter will show the RO that the pistol is clear, make the pistol safe and holster it. He will then go to the unloading table and clear the rifle and shotgun per standard methods. The 1911 shooter and the unloading table officer will verify that the 1911 pistol is empty, the magazine is removed, the slide is released and the hammer is lowered in a safe manner. If any empty magazines are dropped during a stage, they will be retrieved by somebody other than the 1911 shooter and returned to the 1911 shooter at the unloading table.
* Do not expect all brass that is ejected from the 1911 to be recovered at the end of the stage. This is the nature of the beast.
