July 2009
For July, you couldn’t beat the weather. Wasn’t too bad in the sun, and downright comfortable in the shade. We had 36 shooters take advantage of the fine shooting conditions.
1st place and Top Gunfighter was Walker Colt. Punch was 2nd and Top 49er. Geronimo Jim took 3rd place and was Top Senior. Hud McCoy (Top Wrangler) and Wild Bill Diamond rounded out the Top 5.
Other category winners were:
Ladies Classic Cowboy: Sunshine Marcy
Modern: River Banks
Frontier Cartridge: Smoky Hill Thompson
Classic Cowboy: Letort Lawman
Elder Statesman: Church Key
Duelist: Smitty Black
Silver Senior: Bird Dog Jake
Ladies Senior: Misfire Maggie
Ladies’ 49er: Praire Dog Pauline
Webb McAlister and Bird Dog Jake shot clean. Complete scores can be found on the website. (Thanks, again, to Chuckaroo.)
The great debate was whether to move up to shoot the hill pistol target on Stage One, or shoot from Old Cedar. People took different approaches to his, depending on whether they thought the time to run up was more or less than the extra time to assure a hit from Old Cedar (especially for us One-Handers!) When all was said and done some of us missed from Old Cedar and some (including the match writer) took the time to run up and missed anyway! Nonetheless, a good thinking stage without being complex.
Once again, Smoky provided us with challenging stages with variety but no needless complexity. I don’t know how he keeps doing it.
Again, I must remind everyone that the continued survival of our club depends on getting a few people to split up Posse Leader duty, and getting someone to take over the office of the President and help write stages. Please consider pitching in. The future of our club depends on it!
Remember, set ups generally start at 9 am on the Saturday before the match, and we’re usually done by 10:30 or 11.
Think about being the President, or being a Posse leader once or twice per year.
Also in the news: Some small changes in the rules for the 1911 match this October.
First, Adjustable sights will be allowed, as it doesn’t seem that they make much difference (no fiberoptic sights, though), and: M1917 Smith and Colt revolvers will be able to be used (2 of them, or moon-clip reload of a single revolver).
Hope to see you in July.
Until then, Your pard,
Doc Hornaday,
Secretary, Westshore Posse
JANUARY 2009
MINUTES
Meeting was called to order on January 11, 2009 at 10:04 AM by Doc Hornaday. A quorum was present.
2008 Meeting minutes were accepted without review. Motion by Hired gun – Unanimous vote to accept.
Treasury report was given and approved. All 9 scheduled matches were held in 2008. For the year, we posted a $53 deficit. We will again give a total of $500 to Westshore Sportsman’s Association. This to be comprised of $210 of “temporary membership” levies with an additional $290 donation.
OLD BUSINESS:
Our props still have not been replaced at the Rocky Gorge. (Surprise!)
The Posse Officers would like to THANK everyone who came out and helped with set-up and tear downs during our 2008 shooting season. We have had good help for each set-up this year.
NEW BUSINESS:
Doc Hornaday is retiring from the office of President. The role of the
current president was explained, and included being at most of the matches, and
writing some of the matches. If elected Secretary, Doc Hornaday offered to
still write some matches as long as the President could come to the match to
officiate.
***IT WAS ALSO MADE CLEAR THAT UNLESS THIS ROLE CAN BE FILLED THAT THE FUTURE OF THE WESTSHORE POSSE IS UNCLEAR.***
For next year’s elections, the following was proposed for our bylaws regarding nominations for officers:
“Candidates for officer positions shall have been, for the prior year, members in good standing of a SASS affiliated club and currently a member in good standing of the Westshore Posse.”
Final wording will be submitted for approval by the membership in the near future.
The need for posse leaders was also addressed. A good supply of posse leaders avoids burning out the same two or three people. Several with RO certification offered to be in a pool of posse leaders. With an adequate supply of posse leaders, the President’s job would be far less onerous thus possibly making this position more attractive to potential candidates.
Also, Hired Gun will look into getting an RO course at one of our matches, as several of our members (both RO trained and not) indicated interest in taking/retaking the course.
Election of Officers took place:
Doc Hornaday nominated Highlander for Vice President, Letort Lawman seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Doc Hornaday nominated Smoky Hill Thompson for Treasurer, Hired Gun seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Hired Gun nominated Chester Young for Match Results, Davy Crocket seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Letort Lawman nominated Hired Gun for Territorial Governor, Cactus Charlie seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Doc Hornaday nominated Hired Gun for Territorial Governor with Davy Crockett seconding the motion. Motion Carried.
Hired Gun nominated Doc Hornaday for Secretary, Davy Crockett seconded the motion. Motion carried.
No one volunteered to run for President, which is now an open position. Club Secretary to be SASS contact until this position is filled.
Above nominations ran unopposed and were voted into their respective offices.
Club Liaison is an open position. We will discuss with Highlander and Whitefish Willie the possibility of jointly keeping us in touch with WSSA goings-on.
Territorial Governor’s Report
Hired Gun briefed us on rules changes enacted at the Territorial Governor’s
convention.
Briefly:
- Traditional and Modern categories will be combined. A 17-35 and 36+ age splint will be added.
- Team or Sponsor logo’s are outlawed, but manufacturers’ labels are acceptable.
- “All horizontally staged handguns must be staged with the entire handgun lying flat on the staging surface.”
- “ALL clothing and equipment MUST BE worn appropriately, how it was intended and how it would have been worn in the OLD WEST or as seen on B-Western movies and Television.”
- Basically a reaffirmation that once cocked, a gun cannot be decocked to avoid a penalty.
- Ejectors are approved for single shot shotguns.
- “An alternate target MUST be provided for all aerial shotgun targets for Buckaroo and Buckarette shooters.”
Floor was opened for further discussion.
It was decided to continue operating the Westshore Posse for the time being. The President’s position must be filled for continued operation. The President’s tasks can be adjusted if needed to make the position acceptable to an otherwise viable candidate. The Secretary has agreed to continue to write some matches, and can also continue to write the Saddlebags and to maintain contact with SASS. Someone else, though, will need to actually appear at our matches on a more regular basis than Doc Hornaday can currently manage.
Meeting adjourned at 11:36 A M.
Respectfully submitted,
Doc Hornaday
Posse Secretary
Westshore Posse 1911 Shoot Guidelines
On occasion, we will hold joint 1911 / Single Action Revolver, Cowboy Action
Shoots.
This will be a standard Cowboy Action Shooting match with the added attraction
of being able to shoot a 1911 type pistol in lieu of standard single action
revolvers. Scenarios will not differ no matter which style is shot. Folk's
shooting 1911's will have a separate category for scoring purposes and there
will be two overall match winners.
1911 Pistol Requirements:
* Standard single action 1911 Government model pistol having fixed or conventional adjustable sights, a 4-inch or longer barrel and fire .45-caliber ammunition.
* A minimum of 2 magazines capable of holding 5 rounds.
*Period 1911ish holster capable of securely holding 1911 pistol.
Special instructions for folks using a 1911 pistol:
* While pistol is holstered behind the shooting line, the hammer will be lowered and no magazine will be inserted into the magazine well.
* Prior to each stage, magazines will be loaded at the loading table under the supervision of the loading table officer. Magazines will be loaded with no more than five rounds. A magazine will then be inserted into the pistol and the pistol will be holstered. The pistol will be carried to the firing line in the holster with the hammer down on an empty chamber and then made ready on the firing line during the stage (on the clock).
* When the stage begins (on the clock), the shooter will draw the pistol and cycle the slide when it is time for the first pistol target to be shot. If there is a split pistol stage (pistols not shot back to back), the 1911 shooter, after shooting the first and second set of pistol targets, will eject the magazine, and stage the pistol with the slide locked. Any loaded magazine dropped during a stage is dead and may not be retrieved.
* After shooting the entire stage, the 1911 shooter will show the RO that the pistol is clear, make the pistol safe and holster it. He will then go to the unloading table and clear the rifle and shotgun per standard methods. The 1911 shooter and the unloading table officer will verify that the 1911 pistol is empty, the magazine is removed, the slide is released and the hammer is lowered in a safe manner. If any empty magazines are dropped during a stage, they will be retrieved by somebody other than the 1911 shooter and returned to the 1911 shooter at the unloading table.
* Do not expect all brass that is ejected from the 1911 to be recovered at the end of the stage. This is the nature of the beast.
MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS:
Dues will now be due in March for all members. Current members
received their renewal notice in the January newsletter. New members
