This is the tentative shoot schedule for 2012. It is subject to the Westshore Sportsman's Club approval and cancellations due to winter weather.
December 2011
A little surprise at the end of the season! Hud realized that the club was free on Saturday, and that the weather looked to be OK. Sooooo….he contacted WSSA leadership and asked if we could have the club for a Charity shoot to benefit USMC’s Toys For Tots. Not only did WSSA pull things together on very short notice to grant us the use of the club for that day, but they donated $100 to our match for Toys For Tots to boot! A BIG thanks to the WSSA board for their generous cooperation with this shoot (and, for that matter, their cooperation with us all year long)!
Despite the short notice and sub-freezing pre dawn temperatures, 30 cowboys and –girls came out for our Toys For Tots Charity Match this past Saturday. We tried using the range to the Right of the clubhouse for a change. A good change of scenery, and certainly drier than the rest. Naturally, the stages had a holiday flare, addressing things like the famous ‘Red Ryder 200 shot air rifle with the compass in the stock and the thing that tells time.’ (You’ll put your eye out!); the Grinch; and more.
Match Winner and Top Wrangler was No-One. Dirt Rider was Top Senior and Number 2 overall. Montana Max was in 3rd place with Hud McCoy in 4th and Top Cowboy. Geronimo Jim was Top Silver Senior rounded out the Top Five.
Other category winners were:
Gunfighter: Doc Allan Wood
Senior Duelist: Chilliwack Buck
Classic Cowboy: Letort Lawman
49er: Skinny
Duelist: Dice
Frontier Cartridge: Tucker
Classic Cowgirl: Blackhills Barb
Ladies Senior: Annie Dote
Ladies Silver Senior: Copper Starr
Ladies 49er: Dances With Toe Shoes
WB(is this Wild bunch, B-Western or something I don’t know? Sorry, Sarge.): Sgt. Hochbauer
3 shooters shot Clean: Annie Dot, Tucker, and Morgan James
Thanks to Dirt Rider, Letort Lawman, Hired Gun, Slowpoke John, and Morgan James for coming out very early on Saturday to help Hud McCoy and me set up for our match.
Remember that our Posse meeting, with election of officers, will be held at the Westshore Sportsman’s Association club house at 10 a.m. on the second Sunday of January. That will be the 8th of January. Please attend and participate in planning our club’s future.
Thanks to everyone both in the Posse and in WSSA for helping to make this Charity Match a success for Toys For Tots. In the end, we were able to donate $678 in cash and about $250 in toys to the Marines for that very worthy charity.
Doc Hornaday,
Secretary, Westshore Posse
WESTSHORE POSSE
Meeting was called to order on January 8, 2011 at 10:16 AM by Hud McCoy. A quorum was present, represented by members Slowpoke John, Letort Lawman, Professor Tinker, Chester Young, Whitefish Willie, Hired Gun, Skinny, Bottom Dealin Mike, Highlander, Smoky Hill Thompson and Doc Hornaday
2011 Meeting minutes were accepted with a public reading. Motion by Skinny, seconded by Letort Lawman – Unanimous vote to accept.
Treasury report was given and approved. A total of 12 matches were held in 2011. For the year, we posted a $344 loss. It was noted that $764 of expense was attributed to the non-recurring cost of the new computer and SASS scoring software. Due to the increased use of the WSSA with an additional 3 matches beyond our normally scheduled 9, we will give $650 to Westshore Sportsman’s Association. $1867 was given to charity from the Cactus Charlie Memorial Charity match, and $678 in cash and approximately $250 in toys was donated to USMC Toys for Tots at the Toys for Tots Match.
Treasurer’s report was motioned for acceptance by Letort Lawman and seconded by Chester Young. Report was accepted with no “nay” votes.
OLD BUSINESS:
We discussed desirability of replacing props on the Gorge, vs. moveable props with increased use of Range #2 (on the right side of the clubhouse). We will attempt to find out if the money put aside by WSSA for our props is still available, and the kind of purchases for which it can be used.
ELECTIONS:
It was suggested that the current slate of officers be nominated en bloc to serve an additional year in their respective offices. The current officers are agreeable to serving another year. Request for other nominees for club offices revealed no other members interested in running for office. Therefore, a motion was made to extend the term of current officers an additional year by Letort Lawman, and seconded by Skinny. The current officers (President: Hud McCoy; Vice President: Highlander; Treasurer: Smoky Hill Thompson; Secretary: Doc Hornaday; Registration/Scoring: Chester Young; and Territorial Governor: Hired Gun).
Territorial Governor’s Report
Hired Gun briefed us on rules changes enacted at the Territorial Governor’s convention.
Briefly, only one of the proposed rule changes were passed:
- a competitor who misses 2 stages in a SASS match is ineligible to receive any awards.
NEW BUSINESS:
It was felt that we would try to avoid the use of Gorge, announcing its use at the prior month’s match, to avoid those shooters who have problems with the incline going up to the Gorge. Range #2 will be used when possible in its stead.
A discussion was held regarding the waiving of match fees for those who help set up. A motion was made by Professor Tinker to STOP the waiving of match fees for those who help set up. This was seconded by Letort Lawman and passed with no “nay” votes.
It was then motioned that Board members also be required to pay match fees by Skinny. This was seconded by Bottom Dealin Mike and passed with no “nay” votes and 3 abstentions.
It was decided to have setup for the March 2012 match on the morning of the match itself, starting at 0800.
With unanimous approval, we will continue for this year to give badges for Clean Matches to those present at the score reading who want them. This will be revisited on a year to year basis depending on cost.
Hud presented a list of safety items to be read at each safety meeting. A voice vote with was held regarding shot size, and it was determined to follow SASS rule of no larger than 4 shot. After discussion and modification, Slowpoke John made a motion to accept the list which was seconded by Letort Lawman. The safety list was adopted with a unanimous vote.
Motion to adjourn made by Skinny and seconded by Hud McCoy.
Meeting adjourned at 11:25 A M.
Respectfully submitted,
Doc Hornaday
Posse Secretary
Westshore Posse 1911 Shoot Guidelines
On occasion, we will hold joint 1911 / Single Action Revolver, Cowboy Action
Shoots.
This will be a standard Cowboy Action Shooting match with the added attraction
of being able to shoot a 1911 type pistol in lieu of standard single action
revolvers. Scenarios will not differ no matter which style is shot. Folk's
shooting 1911's will have a separate category for scoring purposes and there
will be two overall match winners.
1911 Pistol Requirements:
* Standard single action 1911 Government model pistol having fixed or conventional adjustable sights, a 4-inch or longer barrel and fire .45-caliber ammunition.
* A minimum of 2 magazines capable of holding 5 rounds.
*Period 1911ish holster capable of securely holding 1911 pistol.
Special instructions for folks using a 1911 pistol:
* While pistol is holstered behind the shooting line, the hammer will be lowered and no magazine will be inserted into the magazine well.
* Prior to each stage, magazines will be loaded at the loading table under the supervision of the loading table officer. Magazines will be loaded with no more than five rounds. A magazine will then be inserted into the pistol and the pistol will be holstered. The pistol will be carried to the firing line in the holster with the hammer down on an empty chamber and then made ready on the firing line during the stage (on the clock).
* When the stage begins (on the clock), the shooter will draw the pistol and cycle the slide when it is time for the first pistol target to be shot. If there is a split pistol stage (pistols not shot back to back), the 1911 shooter, after shooting the first and second set of pistol targets, will eject the magazine, and stage the pistol with the slide locked. Any loaded magazine dropped during a stage is dead and may not be retrieved.
* After shooting the entire stage, the 1911 shooter will show the RO that the pistol is clear, make the pistol safe and holster it. He will then go to the unloading table and clear the rifle and shotgun per standard methods. The 1911 shooter and the unloading table officer will verify that the 1911 pistol is empty, the magazine is removed, the slide is released and the hammer is lowered in a safe manner. If any empty magazines are dropped during a stage, they will be retrieved by somebody other than the 1911 shooter and returned to the 1911 shooter at the unloading table.
* Do not expect all brass that is ejected from the 1911 to be recovered at the end of the stage. This is the nature of the beast.
